For more than 30 years, Norfolk Hand Surgery Center, Inc. has been dedicated to providing world class care and service to their patients. We believe in treating the whole individual and restoring as much function as possible.
 
Dr. Frank W. Gwathmey founded our center. He dedicated his professional career to building the Hand Center into the best facility for hand and elbow care in the Hampton Roads area.
 
The practice draws patients and referrals from the entire region including the states of Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland. There are also patients in other regions of the country who come to the center to receive care.

Dr. Christopher K. Hersh - Hand Surgeon

Christopher K. Hersh, MD, MBA

Dr. Christopher K. Hersh, MD, MBA graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in Economics. He attended the University of Kansas School of Medicine and obtained his MD in 1990. He was awarded membership to Alpha Omega, a medical honor society for the top graduates of medical school.

Upon graduation, Dr. Hersh began work in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center, where he trained with some of the nation’s top orthopedic surgeons. He stayed in San Antonio, completing a fellowship in microvascular and hand surgery with the San Antonio Hand Center.

He came to the Hampton Roads area to teach and serve in the United States Navy at Portsmouth Naval Hospital. He served active duty and reserve time while in the Navy. He is board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and has a Certificate of Added Qualifications of Hand Surgery. He is active in the maintenance of certificate programs to keep his training up to date and current with the most innovative hand surgery techniques. Dr. Hersh has been named as one of the region’s top hand surgeons for multiple years.


Douglas R. Trzcinski, MD, FACS

Douglas R. Trzcinski, MD, FACS

Dr. Trzcinski graduated from Auburn University with degrees in Zoology and Mechanical Engineering, as well as a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He obtained his MD from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine in 1997, and went to the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he completed his Plastic Surgery Training. After two years in Private Practice in Upstate New York, he further expanded his hand surgery skills by completing the INTEGRIS Baptist/University of Oklahoma Orthopedic Hand Surgery Fellowship.

He came to the area in 2007 to teach at The Eastern Virginia Medical School and help with the Trauma Program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He joined the Norfolk Hand Surgery Center in 2016.

Dr. Trzcinski is Board Certified with the American Board Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and is ABPS certified in the Subspecialty of Surgery of the Hand. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and American Association for Hand Surgery (AAHS). He has received several awards by both his peers and patients for his quality care.


Juliann Sutterfield PA-C. MPAS       

Juliann Sutterfield PA-C. MPAS

Mrs. Sutterfield graduated from Binghampton University, in New York State, with a B.A. in Psychology. She then attended LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY where she obtained her degree and certification as a Physician Assistant. She continued on to earn a Masters in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) from the University of Nebraska.

Since moving to Virginia in 2000, she has worked in the area of Orthopedics as a Physician Assistant. Juliann joined Dr. Hersh and The Hand Center in 2009/

She is certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) and is a professional member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA).

When not treating patients, Juliann enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, being a Girl Scout leader and playing volleyball.
